Lithium vs calcium vs lithium-complex grease — which to pick.

The grease in a bearing isn't a single product — it's a chemistry decision. Three thickener families dominate Indian industry: lithium soap, lithium complex, and calcium sulfonate complex. They look identical in a tin. They are not.

What a "thickener" actually does

A grease is roughly 80% base oil, 10–20% thickener, and a few percent of additives. The thickener is a soap or polymer that holds the oil in a sponge-like matrix — releasing it slowly under load. The thickener determines almost everything that matters in service: drop point, water resistance, mechanical stability, and compatibility with other greases.

Lithium 12-hydroxystearate — the everyday workhorse

This is the grease 80% of Indian workshops reach for. It's been the multipurpose standard for sixty years for good reason:

Use it for: chassis lubrication, low-temperature bearings, general workshop work, agricultural equipment, two-wheeler hubs, mild industrial duty.

Don't use it for: wheel bearings on heavy disc-brake vehicles, steel-mill bearings, anything seeing sustained temperatures above 100°C.

Lithium complex — the modern upgrade

Adding a complexing agent (typically azelaic or sebacic acid) to lithium 12-hydroxy gives you lithium complex grease — same easy handling, much better high-temperature behaviour. The drop point jumps from ~190°C to ~260°C, the continuous-service temperature ceiling rises by ~40°C, and mechanical stability improves.

For most modern automotive and industrial bearings, lithium complex is the right default. It's the best balance of performance, price, and availability in India today.

Use it for: car wheel bearings (especially disc brakes), commercial vehicle bearings, electric motor bearings, conveyor bearings, off-highway equipment, construction.

Calcium sulfonate complex — the heavy-duty specialist

Calcium sulfonate (CSC) grease is engineered for the worst environments — marine, mining, steel mills, paper mills. The thickener itself provides EP protection and rust inhibition without needing the additive pack that lithium greases rely on. Performance is exceptional:

Use it for: marine deck winches, anchor windlasses, steel mill roll bearings, mining crushers, kiln support rollers, anywhere hot + wet + loaded.

Trade-off: typically 1.8–2.5× the cost of lithium complex, and slightly higher pumping pressure in centralised lubrication systems.

The classic mistake: paying premium for CSC grease in an application that would do equally well on lithium complex — or running cheap lithium grease where the application punishes it and the bearings die early.

Compatibility — what mixes, what destroys

Mixing incompatible greases breaks down the thickener network. The grease softens, loses structure, and bleeds oil out — leaving the bearing un-lubricated. A rough compatibility chart:

When switching grease types, purge the housing of the old grease (pump until clean grease appears, or hand-pack after cleaning).

What is the difference between lithium and lithium complex grease?

Standard lithium grease has a drop point around 190°C. Lithium complex adds a complexing agent that raises the drop point above 260°C, with better high-temperature stability and water resistance.

Is calcium sulfonate grease better than lithium grease?

For severe service — high heat, heavy water washout, marine, mining — yes. Drop point 300°C+, inherent EP and rust protection. For general automotive use, lithium complex is more cost-effective and usually sufficient.

What is the drop point of a grease?

The temperature at which a grease melts from semi-solid to liquid under standard test conditions. Operate at 30–50°C below the drop point for reliable service.

Can lithium grease and calcium sulfonate grease be mixed?

No — incompatible. Mixing softens the grease and breaks down its structure. Purge the housing before switching families.
